Charlotte Rampling inteprets the Virgin Mary and Rutger Hauer stars as the painter himself, who discuss the origin of his work while touring inside his own canvas. Alongside, Nicolaes Jonghelinck, his wealthy patron, bemoans the state of his disintegrating country.
