"Thank you for DogStarNYC, in general. The site speaks to so many kinds of interests; it discerns which qualities will appeal to many different tastes in a tremendous number of activities. I love how it encourages young people to pay attention to the unusual.

In New York we let so many teens walk around the periphery, mildly shell-shocked by life, while the information that they need to make sense of their world sits in the center of the room. DogStarNYC welcomes them into the middle of the room; the blog tells them how to walk there." - Stacy L.

Make it the New YOU Year! Join other teens for free Friday programs at The Frick Collection

Dog Star is amazed every day at how much talent, creativity and potential we see in the teenagers sitting in our classes.  Too often many teens miss great opportunities to get involved - and to find out what their talents can do - because they just don't hear about the many available programs.  It has been the mission of this blog from the start to spread the word about these programs but also to make the case for teens on WHY they should bother to "believe you belong."  When we expand our field of vision - when we are capable of seeing beyond our block and our borough - we see the possibility for ways to add to our lives.  One way to do this is to find out what's out there!  The Frick Collection at 70th Street & 5th Avenue opens its doors on Friday afternoons and invites teens to learn about masterpieces in the collection.  In the photo at top is a view of the West Gallery.  Here for an article in the Wall Street Journal on The Frick Collection.  Here's FIVE REASONS to go:
1.  College-bound teens will have an experience to write about in a personal statement or on the application that is unique and sets you apart from other seniors applying to college.
2.  It's a FREE program in a very expensive city.
3.  Meet other teens - some from public and private schools - outside your own school and neighborhood.  It's amazing to find out what connections can be made IN PERSON and off Facebook!
4.  Nothing beats learning about art by standing IN FRONT OF THE REAL THING - this beats looking at images on the computer.
5.  Go because you believe in your heart that there is a bigger world out there worth exploring.
The program is from 4:30-6:00pm on most Fridays (see upcoming dates below).  Ask two friends to join you and sign up online.  At least go once.  Then go back a month later.  You can go once and never return or you can go every Friday.  The Frick wants you to sign up so they know who is coming.  You can also sign up your friends - the site will ask HOW MANY?  If you sign up - please do show up!  They have limited spots so when you sign up and don't attend you claim a space that keeps another teen from participating.  Eat something BEFORE you go in - there's no food and drink allowed inside and there is no snack bar.  You will turn off your phone, remove earphones and put away all electronics.  If you are likely to text the whole time you're in there - don't bother going.  The Frick wants you ENGAGED in their program, not engaged in YOUR program.  Arrive by 4:15 to hang up your coat (FREE), get your admission ticket (FREE) and join other teens in the entrance hallway (FREE).  You have everything you need to get started.  Now, all you need is to "believe you belong."
