"Thank you for DogStarNYC, in general. The site speaks to so many kinds of interests; it discerns which qualities will appeal to many different tastes in a tremendous number of activities. I love how it encourages young people to pay attention to the unusual.

In New York we let so many teens walk around the periphery, mildly shell-shocked by life, while the information that they need to make sense of their world sits in the center of the room. DogStarNYC welcomes them into the middle of the room; the blog tells them how to walk there." - Stacy L.

Happy Birthday! Pause for a moment to remember the great American Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

DOG STAR knows King is one of our greatest Americans.  Many of us know so little about him beyond the video of the "I Have a Dream" speech.  King's philosophy is rooted in Gandhian non-violence and his contribution to non-violent resistance in this country cannot be overstated.

Brooklyn Academy of Music has a FREE program this morning hosted by actor Danny Glover with a few musical guests and speakers.  It is one of the largest and most elegant gatherings to celebrate King.  More info here...

Here for more on Mahatma Gandhi

Here for more on Dr. King in general

Ambitious DOG STAR readers may want to check out Taylor Branch's giant three-volume biography of King that places his life in the context of American culture and history.  The books are pretty cheap in paperback new ($1.00) and even cheaper (free) at your local library.  More on Amazon here

More on King's speeches can be found with photos, video and text at this centralized site - More here

Before Dr. King's assassination at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, he gave his last speech "I've been to the mountain top"
