DOG STAR has to admit that we were a little surprised to come across this list recently: the 50 films you should see by the age of 14.Surprised mostly because we had never heard of this list. We were looking up something else and a link to the list came up. You know how it is with the web. Six hours later you have forgotten what you were looking for at the start.
The 50 films you should see by the age of 14 is a list created by the British Film Institute in 2005 in order to inspire parents and educators to take movies as seriously as books and other kinds of art.
The top film on the list - Bicycle Thieves or, more commonly known in English, The Bicycle Thief- is an incredible Italian film about a father and son struggling to find the dad's stolen bicycle, which he needs in order to take a job his family so badly needs.
We have shown this film in class and it gets rave reviews. Yes, it is in black and white AND it is in Italian. Be daring. Be bold. Engage with life and search out the mysterious and well-made film over the Hollywood's silly stuff that gets offered to us each week.
- Bicycle Thieves (1948)
- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
- Kes (1969)
- The Night of the Hunter (1955)
- The 400 Blows (1959)
- Show Me Love (1998)
- Spirited Away (2001)
- Toy Story (1995)
- Where is My Friend's House? (1987)
